Process

From photo to ID card

One digital solution, four proven steps.

Step 01

Upload photo

A personalised link by email or SMS, a signed QR code, the operator app or the self-service kiosk. All four channels run in parallel.

Step 02

Validate photo

The AI checks head position, resolution and the common ICAO errors on upload. Optional manual quality control requests a new photo with a reason.

Step 03

Crop photo

The face is centred and cropped to the required format, the background replaced, and the file named by personnel number.

Step 04

Export photo

Download as ZIP or collect by sFTP or REST API. After export the photo is deleted at Photo Collect.

Capture channels

At home or on site

The four channels can be combined, so every person takes the route that works for them.

Smartphone upload

A personalised link lets anyone submit a photo in under two minutes. Runs in the default browser. No app, no login.

Photo kiosk

A self-service column with integrated background removal. Location-flexible, runs 24 hours without mains power, transmits over 4G/5G.

Operator app

Capture at reception or the card office with the iOS and Android app. Personnel numbers are read by OCR.

QR code

A cryptographically signed upload code generated without access to Photo Collect. Built for printed letters.

Validation

Bad photos never enter the queue

The AI checks every upload against the ICAO criteria and gives the person immediate feedback. Optional manual quality control takes an average of one second per photo. No generative AI is applied to a face.

  • No face detected
  • More than one person
  • Face covered
  • Head position and tilt
  • Eyes closed
  • Too close to the edge
  • Insufficient resolution
  • Background not uniform
Case study

SwissPass

The SwissPass is the basic card for public transport in Switzerland, and the personalised red card sits in most Swiss households. Photo capture therefore has to be broad-based, simple and reliable. Alongside digital upload, Photo Collect provides real-time quality checking, automatic cropping and background removal.

Can I integrate Photo Collect into my IT?

Yes. Photos and metadata are collected by sFTP or REST API, or downloaded as a ZIP archive. The file naming follows your personnel or card number scheme.

Where is the data processed?

Entirely in an ISO 27001-certified data center in Switzerland. No data leaves the country and no foreign cloud service is involved.

How many photos can be processed in a day?

Up to 3,000 photos in one working day with manual quality control switched on. Validation alone scales without a practical limit.

How often is a new photo requested?

2 to 4% of photos are requested again. 99% of people submit an accepted photo within three attempts.
